Senate Hearing on Oil Spill Response

On August 20, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation [hearing chair, Senator Gary Peters (D-MI)] is scheduled to hold a field hearing titled, "Pipeline Safety in the Great Lakes: Incident Prevention and Response Efforts at the Straits of Mackinac” in Traverse City, Michigan. NOAA has been asked to provide an overview of the agency's oil spill response and preparedness role, including spill response, damage assessment, and interagency coordination and leadership; collaborations on oil spill response and restoration; Environmental Sensitivity Index maps and data; and oil and chemical pollution models and tools.

The Chief of the Emergency Response Division of NOAA’s National Ocean Service, Office of Response and Restoration, Scott Lundgren, is scheduled to testify.

Senate Hearing on Maritime Security and IUU Fishing

On September 18, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard [Chair, Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK)] is scheduled to hold a hearing titled, “Fish Wars”. The hearing will focus broadly on maritime security and Illegal, Unregulated, Unreported (IUU) fishing in domestic waters and on the high seas, as well as seafood fraud at our nation’s ports. The Deputy Assistant Administrator of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, Paul Doremus, is scheduled to testify.
